Letting Jesus Lead

It's rather easy to let Jesus lead the way when things are going well.  And when we think they are not, we're ready to push Jesus aside and take control.  At the very time we need to keep trusting, we begin to doubt and think we can do a better job.  That's when things get even messier!

Lent reminds us that the journey is mixed with joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, what seems right and what seems wrong, things we understand and things we do not.  On the second Sunday of Lent, our reading from the gospel of Mark finds Jesus trying to prepare his disciples for what was to come.  Peter did not want to hear that suffering was part of the journey ahead.  So what did he do?  He protested!

Are you tired of protesting the direction God has planned for your life?  If so we invite you to join us on the journey of a lifetime as we follow Jesus this Lenten season.  There is joy in the journey when we let Jesus take the lead.  I hope to see you this Sunday at Cornerstone MCC!

Celebration and Tradition

I heard that Mobile celebrated Mardi Gras, but I had no idea how much fun it was! Having the church doors open on Joe Cain Sunday was great outreach as people walked by on their way to the parades.  The time of celebration is coming to an end on this Fat Tuesday and the tradition of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.  Talk about opposites, we go from a great big party into a time of quiet introspection.

I invite you to think about something in your life you would like to give up for good, and use the days of Lent to break a bad habit.  Or do just the opposite, think of something you would like to add to your life and use the days of Lent to form a new habit.

Whatever you do is between you and God, unless you choose to share it with others.  If you're having trouble deciding what to do just be quiet and still and listen to the Holy Spirit who will whisper to your heart.  Lent is a time of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation.  The time to begin is now.  For those who take this journey, you will be changed.  I hope to see you along the path.

Bringing Jesus to Life

We live in a world in which Jesus is viewed as a good person, a great teacher, and some may go as far as to call him a prophet. But for those who call Jesus Lord and Savior, we know He is the Son of God. And because we know, we are called to share this truth with others and help bring Jesus to life for them.

We will be celebrating Transfiguration Sunday this week. This was another one of those times when Jesus as God's Son was affirmed here on the earth. To those present that day, there remained no doubt of His Divine identity. That knowledge compelled them to go forth and share.

When was the last time you were compelled to do something...especially for Jesus? We are called to bring Jesus to life in our lives, our church and our world. Join us Sunday as we worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Then you can go and celebrate Joe Cain Sunday. If Joe Cain could bring Mardi Grias to life for Mobile, we can bring Jesus to life for Mobile!

Are You in the Race and Running to Win?

This weeks scripture reading comes from I Corinthians 9:24-27. Last week we were flying and this week we are running to win. Christianity is supposed to be an action word and the Bible contains so many wonderful images to help us get it.

I like the way it's stated in the Message:
"You've all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You're after one that's gold eternally."

"I don't know about you, but I'm running hard for the finish line. I'm giving it everything I've got. No sloppy living for me! I'm staying alert and in top condition. I'm not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself."
